Apple takes a commission on every subscription bought inside an iPhone app. We do not get that money and we cannot opt out of it — using Apple's in-app purchase is a condition of being in the App Store at all. The higher price covers the commission. It does not buy you anything extra, and we would rather say so plainly than quietly charge more and hope you do not compare.
Subscribing on this website avoids the commission entirely, which is why it is cheaper. It is the same account, the same app and the same features — you subscribe here, then sign in on your iPhone as normal.
You will not see this comparison inside the app. App Store and Google Play rules both forbid an app from pointing you at a cheaper way to pay, so the apps stay quiet about it. That is a store rule, not a secret.
The split does not apply to schools. Apple's in-app purchase cannot bill per instructor seat, so there is no App Store product for a school to buy — every school subscribes on this website at £15.99 per seat per month, whatever device the owner happens to be using. Seats adjust automatically as instructors join or leave.
